dipperfisher_200 (1) The Fisher Constellation, Bringer of Seasonal Changes

The way our culture uses constellations in the night sky has not changed since 150 CE. In 1922, our our current sky map with 88 constellations, including 42 animals, 29 inanimate objects and 17 humans or mythological characters, used only stars visible to the naked eye, like Ptolemy did, 1870 years ago. Even though by 1922, vast reaches of space had been mapped beyond the naked-eye stars, our map is made as if the telescope did not exist. Our night sky is traced with patterns that are meant to be used by astronomers to catalogue celestial locations. Our 88 constellations hold quaint stories about times that are no more. We have a soulless sky.

This was not always so. At the top of the page and just above are star constellations that are meant to remind us of how to live wisely where we are. In mythologies around the Great Lakes, the Big Dipper is Fisher, an animal similar to an otter. The path Fisher makes around the sky is connected to the changing of the seasons, in particular the coming and going of birds. Fisher mirrors the seasonal motion, a clockwise motion that synchronizes with the rhythm and pulse of life on Earth. Since the beginning, our homeland moves through a death and re-birth cycle so that life can always go forward into the future.

4709fde836 Guided by The Drinking Gourd

During the Underground Railroad from the late 1700’s to 1865, the Drinking Gourd was the name for the Big Dipper that always pointed to Polaris the North Star. The Drinking Gourd during those years was the last time our culture had a living sky. The Railroad went from the deep south in the United States into Toronto, Canada. In that tradition, the Spirit of Care for All, unified persons of all walks of life. There were conductors who moved from station to stationfriends with friends. The code-name for Cleveland was Station Hope. In those days, the hope was freedom in Canada. In the oral tradition, there were 40,000 persons who made the journey to free soil.

NEW HEAVENS IN A LIVING MYTHOLOGY

In the work of Joseph Campbell, a living mythology has 4 functions: mystical, cosmological, social, and pedagogical. To-restore soul to our culture, I have created the Ur-constellations.

The ur-constellations are our 88 inherited Western constellations transformed and updated by literally and poetically integrating magnification into them. By magnification, the mystical, cosmological, social and educational functions of a living mythology can return to the people.
— F. Christopher Reynolds

For the mystical function, a living mythology opens the heart to the direct experience of awe. The mystical function ever invites daily, seasonal, yearly, centennial, millennial re-connection to that direct experience of awe as well as fortifies the connection. The cosmological function allows psychological understanding to live well in the cosmos our observations and science has observed. The social function invites, renews and affirms the stability of cultural life. The pedagogical or educational function allows for wise choices in the unfolding of a person’s, an institution’s, a nation’s, a planet’s learning.

THE STATIONS = A RUNNING = A CURRICULUM

Dream teacher, Robert Moss, was encouraged by a dream to raise up how Harriet Tubman is an exemplar of how dreaming can contribute to liberating people and communities from an unjust order.

Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman, conductor

Harriet Tubman helped many escaping slaves to get to freedom in the years before the American Civil War. She used dreams and visions of maps to get parties of fugitive slaves across otherwise unknown terrain, even across a flooded river.

In our times, the road to freedom has moved right inside our homes into our own souls. We have a great opportunity to move forward in a re-newed Spirit. We are all called to see the road to freedom through dreaming and through devotion to assist each other towards liberation. These are the days to Follow the Dreaming Gourd. When we align ourselves well with the depths of consciousness in our homes, communities, ecosystems unto the planet and body-cosmos. Our dreams guide us loyally to wholeness in life when we befriend them and work together, create together, dream together with the Dream of the planet.

The ur-constellations offer the sky that fits our living myth.

It is a curriculum in the sense that each curriculum is a ‘running’ to be taken on together. Our goal is to fully awaken in the dream we have been dreaming, embodied in the here and now. Human flourishing recognizes how life on Earth as a loving union of timelessness and time is of a greater value than either one alone.

The journey now is out of shallow awareness into full and wholeness of evolutionary being, at home on a sacred Earth in a sacred cosmos. We are going from a small and mean notion of wholeness that can be shown by this image below. The yellow circle is the entire universe of our ancestors. We live in a culture where most of our institutions are based on this out-of-date idea of the universe. We can take a cue from Plato who called the starry heavens, the moving image of Eternity, and see how small a mirror many still use when imagining the feeling of Eternity.

We are all working together to awaken and deepen awareness because we now live in this cosmos pictured below. We live in a 13.820,000,000 years old universe that is in chronic expansion:
