My predecessor Benedict XVI likewise proposed ‘eliminating the structural
causes of the dysfunctions of the world economy and correcting models of
growth which have proved incapable of ensuring respect for the environment.’
— Pope Francis in Laudato Si’
Catholics and Christians have been called to eliminate the structural causes of the dysfunctions of the world economy in such a way that strengthens respect for our ecosystems and bioregions. After many centuries of teaching that the planet was inferior to the sky above, the transformation called forth requires a return to indigenous wisdom. These are times for the co-creation of a new way forward.
This transformation has been occurring for some time now at the grass-roots level. In education, the task of de-colonizing through the creation of ethical space is one example among many. Ethical space, first described by Marie Battiste in 2013, is a joining together of Western and Indigenous Wisdom. It is a birthing space for creation of new ways forward together.
